With a traditional thumb rest, the weight of the instrument rests on the very end of the thumb. This places a heavy weight on the thumb. With the Kooiman's Maestro 2 it rests on the middle of the thumb, which not only alleviates the thumb but also frees the rest of the hand. The Maestro 2 is also placed higher up on the clarinet, which gives the player much more freedom and the thumb regains its natural position rather than being pushed downward.
